Art is a vital part of a successful and compassionate society. It is for this reason, that I believe art education is so vital to the public school system. I believe that teaching art to the next generation will help to shape who they are as people and to appreciate their own creations, as well as other's work. Art creates a culture of appreciation and understanding. In a time when bullying is one of the largest social issues in schools, art is needed more than ever. All students will benefit from art education.
Throughout history, art has always been at the forefront of science as well as education. Through learning perspective, geometric shape, and creativity, students can benefit in all of their classes. Art teaches students creative solutions and not just multiple choice options with only one correct answer. This is a life lesson that many other subject areas and state testing do not teach.
Aside from simply teaching the curriculum I hope to offer life benefits as well. I am passionate about working with students and making truly meaningful connections with them. What I felt was lacking in my own education was guidance in life goals and how to overcome obstacles. I intend to correct this problem for my students. I would like to teach students to take their education into their own hands. One example would be the low budget given to the art department. Students can help take matters into their own hands by participating in creative fundraisers. One such example would be the fashion class selling raffle tickets for a student to win a prom dress. This will not only help the program become stronger, it will greatly enhance the students education. Not only will they have access to more art supplies and potential educational field work they will grow as people as well.
From this experience students will learn that any obstacles they meet in life can be overcome with enough hard work and some creative thinking. Students with learning disabilities may have one more obstacle than their peers. These students can benefit just as much, if not more, from this type of thinking and education.
Furthermore I believe that all students should have support from their parents, whether they have a learning disability or not. Parents should be very supportive at home for the students and meet with teachers at parent-teacher conferences, back-to-school nights or any other event. Parents of students with learning disabilities should meet more often with the resource teacher. If needed, additional meetings with the subject teachers should occur when necessary. I believe that a community of support will help these students, and all students succeed. Parents, faculty and students should be working together toward the same goal. I also feel that integrating students with learning disabilities is beneficial for both students as long as they are at a level that allows them to learn. Other students can offer help and insight through examples of their own work. A resource teacher is necessary to offer the correct amount of one-on-one time as well as any special accommodations that the subject teacher cannot offer, such as taking the student outside the classroom to read them test questions. Parental support at home is of course ideal. If everyone is on the same page, the students will receive the education they deserve.
In my own life, I personally discovered how to overcome obstacles in my adult life. I would like to equip all students with this skill early in life so that they may progress further in their goals and improve the society they become a part of. Our society needs work and constant evolution and I want to work with people who will grow to make that happen.
I hope to keep the importance of art alive in the education system and to help shape a society of problem solvers and peacemakers. This passion and drive will help me to inspire my pupils and ignite in them their own desire to create a better world. I hope to give them the tools they need or the tools to find what they do need to in order to build a better society.
